Duval, artist-cum-ragman, 5 rue Visconti, 1948
“In the early morning when everyone is still asleep, Maurice Duval is at work. He goes through the garbage cans on rue des Beaux-arts, not only to find sustenance but also materials for his art. In the afternoon, he paints on the banks of the Seine. Sometimes an art student stops in front of his work, amazed. When evening draws in, Maurice washes his oilcloth canvas in the river. It will be dry again by the next day and ready for reuse.”
