The 5 Keys to Tumblr for Media Outlets →
markcoatney:
soupsoup:
…for tech-savvy media outlets, it has not been exactly clear *what* to use Tumblr for. The most successful effort (in my humble opinion) was created by former Newsweek employee Mark Coatney, who then promptly got hired by Tumblr itself. (The New Yorker tumblr is a solid runner up.) So, leave it to ProPublica, an old-school investigative journalism non-profit to come...

'Paranormal Activity'
“Paranormal Activity” is the scariest movie I’ve seen in quite a while. Makes me want to watch “The Blair Witch Project” again to see which one is better. The “found footage” device worked in both movies, but the mundane setting of “Paranormal Activity” — just this couple’s boring house — made the bumps in the night that much spookier.

Rupert Murdoch, Neel Shah, and the Short Pants →
Last month, my friend Neel Shah left his job at the New York Post’s “Page Six” and moved to LA to write for a network sitcom. Neel’s new gig marked not only the end of his time in New York, but the end of a year-long fascination with the management style of his boss’ boss’ boss, Rupert Murdoch….
Amazing, hilarious story.

When I first heard sarcasm, I didn't understand
Once when I was about 5, I decided to unroll the toilet paper in the bathroom. I gave the roll a spin, and whee! The paper cascaded to the floor, looking like a waterfall. So I gave it a couple more spins. Fun!
My mom didn’t share my joy. She rolled the toilet paper back up, but instead of a nice neat cylinder, it now looked like a mess. Even I could see that. So I was confused when she...

ProPublica Photographer: I Was Followed by BP... →
marco:
To summarize:
A photographer took these photos of a BP oil refinery while standing on the grass median of a public road. (With very few exceptions, it’s perfectly legal to take pictures of anything visible from a public place, even if the subject is privately owned.)
BP’s security noticed, called the city police, and followed him by car to a gas station.
The police forcefully detained,...

A Funny Thing Happened in Omaha… | Cole Thompson... →
Cole shares a story about security guards who don’t know the law as it relates to photography in public places. Unlike a lot of photographers who have to deal with this nonsense, he mostly seems to have laughed it off.
He also has some good advice for photographers who find themselves in such situations.

My 'iconic America' spot
The Union-Tribune ran a piece* on the Fourth of July in which readers wrote about places that, for them, define America. Besides the obvious and appropriate - the Statue of Liberty, Yellowstone, Las Vegas (hey, this nation was built on a gamble) - were some quirky choices - Spokane, Wash.; Ripley, Ohio; somebody even made a decent case for Ocean Beach.
My favorite reader choice was The Open Road....
